Major responsibilities included programming the yearly workshop series consisting of a variety of in-house and guest presentations dealing with issues such as: study skills, personal health, resume building and other student driven issues. Additional responsibilities included serving as a peer mentor to first year students (transfer students) in SSSP working to help them become more acclimated with the campus and the SSS program. Graduate Assistant, SCIENCE BOUND, Institute for Physical Research and Technology (IPRT)
Iowa State University
August 2008 – May 2010
Responsible for the overhaul and implementation of the Science Bound senior year program, “Countdown to Iowa State” for 31 students from Des Moines and 2 students from Marshalltown. The 2009-10 version of the Countdown to Iowa State was revised to begin in June 2009 instead of September 2009. Worked with students and families to have them to become engaged earlier in the admissions, scholarship and financial aid processes. In this program, I had to overcome significant language barriers with many families and address the delicate issue of the legality of a student or parental citizenship. Worked to make the transition for students and families smoother through numerous campus-based administrators presenting to families in Des Moines & Marshalltown, coordinating two Science Bound specific campus visit days (Fall – Family Day; Spring – Student Shadow Day) and implementing a mid-year individual meeting with Science Bound staff and families to make sure individual needs were met.

A major project accomplished was the production of the 2009 & 2010 Junior-Senior Shadow Day which paired high school students with Iowa State undergraduate and graduate students in related fields. Preparation for Shadow Day consisted of working with numerous on-campus offices and faculty members to secure permission for students to visit courses, handing meals for all participants, training Iowa State students for the program and preparing for possible logistical difficulties.

Additional duties included assisting with the Middle School Science Fairs (Des Moines & Marshalltown) serving as a project judge and support staff; supporting Science Bound Saturday Iowa State campus visits for all districts (Des Moines, Marshalltown and Dension) through facilitating workshops for Juniors/Seniors and accompanying groups of students during their visits. Teaching four sections of Language Arts for the Learn & Earn summer program for over 80 students in the Des Moines school district.

In this position I was able to support students and their families navigating the complex process of applying to college, understanding scholarship programs and applying my knowledge of the financial aid process to support a diverse population of students.

As a graduate assistant, we were trained with significant knowledge of the Financial Aid process including information about Title IV funds, eligibility requirements for federal and state aid programs, how to create financial aid awards, knowledge of the FAFSA documents and understanding of many of the online systems NLDS, Direct Loans website, Iowa State ADIN & AccessPlus systems.
