One day after officials from Grambling State University responded to proposed cuts to its budget, the Southern University System has released a statement advocating against more than $19 million in reduced state funding to the United State's only historically black system of higher education.

Benedict College recently received two federal grants totaling $3.4 million over a five-year funding period from the United States Department of Education. The five-year grant comes under the Department of Education's Upward Bound program which seeks to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

The Washington Times today reports that a Howard University Hospital employee has been charged with selling the personal information of hospital patients for more than a year.

Grambling State University today released a statement in response to Louisiana House Bill 1, a measure proposing a $5.5 million reduction in state funding to the university. GSU President Frank Pogue warned of substantial layoffs and program cuts if the bill is passed.

And if there is to be a public acknowledgment of how black people have been doubly disadvantaged by segregation and desegregation alike, there is no better example deserving support than historically black colleges and universities. Debate on subsidized housing and healthcare is healthy. Debate on equitable opportunities at higher education is not healthy, and no other institution is as structurally or culturally prepared to meet America's demand for an increase educated professionals and innovators than HBCUs.

Tennessee State University track and field coaching legend Ed Temple was among the inductees recently announced by the HOF committee, and will be enshrined on July 12 in Chicago.

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents last week announced Dr. Cheryl Davenport Dozier as the permanent president of Savannah State University. Dr. Dozier, a Masters of Social Work alumna of Atlanta University, had held the position on an interim basis since April of 2011, and in that time, has created successful initiatives to improve customer service, alumni giving and retention.

Grambling State University men's basketball will lose practice time, scholarships and two games off of its 2012-13 schedule as a penalty for shortcomings in established NCAA's academic progress rate benchmarks, the school announced today.

Kappa Kappa Psi, a national honorary band fraternity, today released a statement announcing the five-year suspension of the Florida A&M University Delta Iota chapter of the organization. Additionally, 28 members of the fraternity associated with hazing during a spring 2010 initiation have been expelled from the organization.
