About BeSquared

bbellamy_yearbook_06I am a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, now residing in Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard area of the District of Columbia. I attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (Social Change and Cultural Development) in May 2008. In May 2010, I received my Masters of Education degree in Education (Higher Education) from Iowa State University. Additional study was conducted at the University of Illinois through the Committee on Institutional Cooperation’s Summer Research Program for Minorities (CIC-SROP) during the summer of 2006. My personal research interests are African American males in Higher Education, Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the role of education in economic development.

I am currently an Advisor at a local community college working to improve retention, graduation and transfer rates within a federally funded program. I have become very interested in the role of the community college as a source for high-quality, affordable and accessible education. However, in this role my continued questions about educational disparities, advantages based on socio-economic condition and continued community support continue to lead me to find ways to become engaged outside of my every day work at the college.

While my job and my continuous search for new opportunities take up the bulk of my energies, I enjoy visiting the various parks and museums, trying new restaurants in the Barracks Row & U Street districts and supporting the Washington Nationals.  I am very enthusiastic about the positive growth occurring in Wards 6, 7 and 8 in the District.  Hopefully I will become a homeowner in the District very soon possibly across the river.

It is my vision to use my skills and experiences as a tool to support urban development initiatives that in theory should: reduce our environmental footprint, improve the educational achievement gap, reduce crime rates and provide increased job opportunities for citizens. We must be willing to reach out and help one another as we seek to be good stewards while on earth.
